The Sweet Essence Of Love: Raneem Liyanah Rahmani has always been a woman of intellect and faith. A dedicated lawyer in Finland, she was born in Afghanistan but grew up embracing both her heritage and the values her parents instilled in her. Though she does not wear the hijab, her Iman is profound, guiding her every step. Ziyad Ihsan is a biotechnological engineer, a man of strong faith and unwavering principles. Born and raised in Finland to a Turkish mother and a Finnish revert father, he has always known that love, in its purest form, is built on faith, trust, and devotion to Allah. When their families arrange a marriage proposal, neither of them expect how beautifully their lives will intertwine. Under the guidance of their parents, they embark on a journey of supervised conversations, prayers, and Istikhara-trusting that Allah will lead them to what is best. And when their hearts find peace in His decree, they tie the knot. But love is not instant. It blossoms through patience, understanding, and the quiet, profound moments after Nikkah. Through every shared prayer, every thoughtful conversation, and every test that strengthens their bond, Raneem, and Ziyad discover that the sweetest love is nurtured with sincerity and devotion. A halal love story of faith, marriage, and the beauty of growing together-The Sweet Essence Of Love, is a tale of two souls brought together by destiny, learning that the purest love always puts Deen before Dunya.

A Bradley crew. Four days. One impossible choice. Afghanistan, 20XX. Lieutenant Amelia Carver commands a three-person Bradley Fighting Vehicle crew on overwatch duty in the dusty ridges outside Kunduz. The days blur together-scan sectors, engage threats, eat terrible MREs, try not to think about home. Then something unexpected happens. A little Afghan girl sees their armored vehicle and doesn't run. She waves. She smiles. And the next day, she comes back. Over four days, a fragile connection forms between hardened soldiers and a child who's lost everything but hasn't lost hope. In a war zone where trust can get you killed, where every interaction is a potential threat, the crew finds themselves looking forward to her visits. But the insurgents have been watching too. And they understand something the Americans don't: in asymmetric warfare, humanity isn't a strength. It's a vulnerability.

I wrote this story in response to my soldiers. When I told them I was leaving the army to become a teacher, they laughed. "Imagine SSG T., a teacher. Ha!" "He'll be screaming at kids and making them push." "You could scare the shit out of them by giving them a thousand-yard stare and putting on camo." It became a joke about what kind of teacher I would be, after having been an infantry squad leader. Bits and pieces of this story are true, but it's mostly a combination of my old Polar Bear brothers' jokes. Pro Patria! First published in, Proud to Be: Writing by American Warriors, Volume 4
