Ongoing wars, must be truly ugly and unpublishable. This, a look at "being there," from someone who was not, might capture the mentionable part of the fighting.

Freshly emerged from war in Afghanistan, walking the streets of New York City yet killed by a grenade and invisible to anyone but the voice in his head, a killed soldier wonders if he played life the right way when presented with three wishes.

I wrote this story in response to my soldiers. When I told them I was leaving the army to become a teacher, they laughed. "Imagine SSG T., a teacher. Ha!" "He'll be screaming at kids and making them push." "You could scare the shit out of them by giving them a thousand-yard stare and putting on camo." It became a joke about what kind of teacher I would be, after having been an infantry squad leader.
