Description "We Have Lives to Live" is a powerful poem about the unfair expectations placed on young girls from childhood. While girls are often told to cook, clean, serve, and prepare themselves for marriage, boys are sometimes allowed to sit back and do nothing simply because they are boys. The poem challenges the belief that a girl's greatest purpose is to become a wife and please her husband. It reminds us that before she becomes someone's wife, she is a person with dreams, ambitions, talents, and a future of her own. This poem calls for a different kind of upbringing-one where both boys and girls learn responsibility, household duties, respect, independence , and compassion. Marriage should be a partnership, not a lifetime sentence of service for one person. Girls deserve education. Girls deserve dreams. Girls deserve choices. And boys deserve to be taught responsibility. Because a girl's life does not begin when she gets married. She already has a life to live.
