The story begins the morning after Becka is taken by the Eyes for murdering her father. As Gilead prepares to make an example of her, Agnes wants to save her best friend from the fate that awaits girls who break its rules. Not only for Becka's sake, but for six-year-old Elizabeth "Lizzie" Grove, Becka's little sister, who wakes up to find her father dead, her sister gone, and no one willing to tell her why. As Agnes pleads with Commander Weston to bring Becka home, she risks everything she has spent her life working toward-her future marriage, her place in this society, and the carefully planned path laid out before her. Because the thought of losing Becka is unbearable, she would do anything to save her. Agnes starts to realize that her best friend is the one person in this world she loves most. And now she's trying to understand what that even means.

"𝑰 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒎𝒆" All Isabelle Whitlock has ever truly known was Gilead. Even if she was born in the "before world", Gilead is the only thing she knows. The before world was dark and cold. Full of the kind of the dirty girls Gilead saved her from becoming. In Gilead, she was raised properly. To obey. To serve. To become a good wife to her future husband. Her "mother" promises security for her, even with the mutual hatred rooted deeply in her heart. This is the life Isabelle is meant to want. No. The life she needs. And she tells herself she does. A husband. A home. A place where she is safe. So why can't she stop looking at the brunette girl she spends her days beside at the Aunt Lydia school? Why do her thoughts linger too long, drift too far, become something she cannot name without fear clawing up her throat? She buries it. She has to. Because girls like that are wrong. Dangerous. Disgusting. Because she refuses to be a gender traitor. Even if her heart doesn't seem to understand the rules. becka grove x oc
