The story begins the morning after Becka is taken by the Eyes for murdering her father. As Gilead prepares to make an example of her, Agnes wants to save her best friend from the fate that awaits girls who break its rules. Not only for Becka's sake, but for six-year-old Elizabeth "Lizzie" Grove, Becka's little sister, who wakes up to find her father dead, her sister gone, and no one willing to tell her why.
