After living her whole life in the Northern Water Tribe, Hai was tired of her tribes ways and customs. She did not want to be forced to get married at 16 nor did she want to keep her water bending to strictly healing. Upon arrival of the Avatar, Hai sees this as an opportunity to finally leave for good. Only, Hai did not leave with the Avatar. She left with an old man, following him as he left the Northern Water Tribe. Nauvia (Nah-Via) thought Zuko would've been the first one to help the avatar from last she saw of him. But little does she know instead of helping he's hunting him down.
