He was his own man and not some character in some cheap Wake novel, yet it seemed as if he lived in his own alter-ego's shadow. Even more troubling, contact with Cauldron Lake causes "Nightmare Max" to split off and become a separate person. Max has no choice but to face her fears and doubts again.
