Alina figured that a dead man did not need all the bones he once had.

It has been more than a year since Alina Oretsev (formerly known as Alina Starkov) has tried to shake off the events that destroyed the Shadow Fold and that stripped her of her Sun Summoner's powers. The events that took his life - the life of the Darkling, also known as Aleksander Morozova, The Black Heretic or The Shadow King. Alina is now married to Malyen Oretsev, which she such desperately wanted some time ago. Everything seems to be going like she once wished, allowing her to nearly forget about her being the former Grisha and about all political conflicts constantly tormenting Ravka after the Darkling's death. But Mal pushes her to have a child with him and Alina is only 19 - which means she's not ready for it. The constant pressure from her husband awakens the unknown feelings, evoking shadows that the former Sun Summoner had been so disgusted with not that long ago. But he's dead, so that's impossible... isn't it? However, there is something that Alina hasn't known yet. After killing Aleksander Morozova by her own hands she unnecessarily kept a knife which had taken his life. It was a huge mistake. She even unnecessarily hid this knife as her greatest treasure... ***************** Will jealousy release the dark part of Alina's nature? The darkness is alluring, the power is even more tempting. Would she be cold and callous or would she try to fight it-would she try to be good? If you read my other Darklina book "The True Saint", this one is the opposite (although it does not connect with my other book so it can be read separately). Instead of Alina making Aleksander a better man, she becomes a monster. This takes place the night of the Winter Fete and continues until the end of Ruin & Rising. What would happen if Alina did not run that night and instead confronted the Darkling about her new knowledge of the Black Heretic? He pushes off from his chair and I shiver in my seat as he pauses by my side. The Darkling's hands find my chin and he holds my head tenderly with both hands. My power sparks at his touch like fire to kindling and I have to clench a hand in my dress skirt to keep control. He makes sure my gaze is entirely on him when he says, "And you know you will." I shake underneath the pressure of his words and he strokes my chin to calm me. Fine, but he has no idea what he is asking for. I shall be a queen, but not his. As a whirlwind of events sets her right back on square one, Alina makes a vital decision to change everything. Still, she finds herself teetering in the edge of letting the Darkling and her powers swallow her up. The Sun Summoner has grown and she can no longer be a saint. Aleksander didn't expect their tether to be so strong. He is drawn to her and he just doesn't want to resist this pull, he had already waited long enough to find her.
