Fifteen-year-old Esmee Laurent lives between her family's grand estate in Nice and their sun-drenched villa in Levanto, Italy. After choosing travel over settling down, she returns to the Riviera aching for her best friend Giulia, who has already left Portorosso for school in Genova - leaving only her letters about a new friend, Luca, who is supposedly a sea monster. Riding her vespa back into the sleepy fishing town of legends and the upcoming Portorosso Cup, Esmee finds Giulia's yard empty and reconnects with Giulia's father Massimo, the kind, one-armed fisherman, in their old treehouse. He hires her to help with his fish orders for pesto, and as the town feels strangely quiet, Esmee begins to wonder if Giulia's wild sea monster stories might actually be true.
