In an indeterminate future, humans have developed possession and the use of magic. Out of fear and envy, the possessors of magic are marginalised and cast out by those so-called 'normal' people. Those with too great a power is considered dangerous and called Anomaly. Kieran is a Hunter who captures Anomalous, people who possess magic and are considered dangerous. Zoe, a childhood friend, is considered an Anomaly, and her family was exterminated by Kieran's father, known as the Cerberus, who works for the Agency. Both want to know the truth behind the Agency's persecution of those with magic and they also want revenge against the Cerberus.

I didn't mean to --." A large tom said with no sympathy in his eyes. "You monster! You k--." The young she-cat crouched A black tom hushed the young she-cat. "Falconpaw was a brave warrior Snowpaw. But we have to many injuries to worry about revenge, we can wait another time." The she-cat growled as she glared at the large sand colored tom. As she stepped forward she heard a gasp. "He's still alive Tornpelt, but barely. We must get him to Hopflight quickly!"

'No! Please don't do this. There has to be another way. PLEASE! Just stop.' I grip his arm, turning him around to face me. All I could see is a person that wears the same mask as someone I used to know, cold eyes filled with unrecognizable emotion with a stoic and frigid expression. 'You don't have to do this. We'll get through this. Together.' Tears freely flowing as I reach for the kill-safe. 'Just please give it to me.' 'There is no other way! Some things are just unintended... like bumping into a conceited vampire at a party, hating his guts then - against all your better judgement and frequent protests - inexplicably making him believe that you've fallen in love with him. Then before you know it you're being sucked into a world of fantasy and danger that you had no idea existed. Of course, these things are just bound to happen to Anne Forbes - it's just her luck. She doesn't even want this, but who even asked for her opinion on these things?
