Your mother was one of the lucky ones. She got out before everything collapsed and it became every man, woman, and child for themselves. Family, friends, true loves… none of it mattered after that. 200 years after an uprising, the world is in ruin. Civilization has all but collapsed, held together only by the tyrant government known as the Alliance. Chris, an orphan left in an alleyway, tries to find the mysterious Resistance that everyone says doesn't exist. He bands up with Emma, a teenage mother who killed her boyfriend to survive, Joh, Emma's infant son, and James, a soldier who used to fight in the Alliance's army before he was discharged for mysterious reasons. Can Chris find the Resistance, or will the odds prevail and he'll be killed by one of the people he helps feed?

A short story. I wrote this after being given the task of finding an article and imagining what happened either before or after the event. I was only allowed to use 500 words, although I went slightly over. Hope you enjoy.

In a strange dream, a black cat appeared. It had piercing green eyes and a sleek coat that shone in the moonlight. The cat led me through a maze of twisting alleyways and dark corners, always just out of reach. I followed it until we reached a clearing, where the cat sat down and looked at me expectantly. Suddenly, the world around us shifted and changed, becoming brighter and more vibrant. The cat stood up and transformed into a beautiful woman with long black hair. She smiled at me and said, "Thank you for following me. I needed someone to share this dream with." And then she disappeared, leaving me standing alone in the clearing, wondering what had just happened.

I wiped my eyes once again to see deep piercing green ones looking down at me. More tears came as I saw the root of my anger, and I stood up pushing past him. I tried to run but got pulled back by a hand grabbing my wrist. "What happened?" Clyde demanded angrily. "Get off of me!" I growled and pried his fingers off my wrist and continued to the bathroom. Once inside I went into a stall and grabbed some toilet paper to wipe my face. Why was I always crying? I heard the door open and I tried to contain my sniffling so that they wouldn't hear. Then I looked down to see the feet and saw Clyde crawling under my stall. ~~~~~ Alexa Moore is a crybaby. She can't deal well with her emotions; if she is frustrated, angry, sad, mad, or hurt she can't help but cry. She hates that she always feels the need to cry and tries to stay happy by being unconfrontational, and staying away from jerks. Clyde Wood is seemingly heartless. Through the bad, sad, hurtful, and pissing situations he appears to be tougher than nails. Sure he is happy most times, but in the eyes of many he is a heartless jerk that picks on everyone. If it wasn't for his great looks he'd probably be with the Gothic kids, not the popular ones. That, and he made a hobby of being a player. Alexa meeting Clyde was definitely a recipe for disaster, causing her to shed more tears than in her entire 17 years. The year goes from good to bad to good to bad, and end bad? With so much heart churning events, will there really be a rainbow after the storm?
