It was dark when we reached the crossroads. Sweat gathered in the palm of my hand where my sister was clenching it so hard I could barely feel my fingers. I was a warm sweat, that countered the chill in the air. I wanted to tell her to stop, it hurt - but no, she needed something right now. The breeze whispered past and something rippled in the faded moonlight of the puddle to our left. I kept walking, whispering words of encouragement to the air. "Ris, I'm hungry...", I turned back to look down at the smaller version of myself. "Can I have some food?". I kissed the top of her head and bent down, skimming the coarse fabric of her tunic as I picked her up. "We're almost there," I whispered into her ear. A cold nose pressed against my cheek as I strode forward, looking for the light of the promised village.
