The Emperor of Russia's four daughters - Olga, Tatiana, Marie, and Anastasia - are best friends as well as sisters. Being in an unusual position as daughters of the one of the world's most powerful men, sometimes it feels that they are each other's only true companions. They must savour all the time they have left, though, as they are rapidly changing from beguiling little girls hidden away in the palace nursery to charming young women whose names dominate gossip magazines with talk of which foreign princes they will one day marry. It is 1913, and the imperial family is celebrating three hundred years of their family's rule. The tercentenary celebrations mark the beginning of the last full year the girls have to just be sisters; to venerate their youth. But beyond the gates of the Alexander Palace, a different fate is in store for the sisters and their family. Europe is a freight train of politics and tensions charging headfirst into the modern era, and the House of Romanov, steeped in tradition and antiquity, must change with it, or else be crushed under the wheel of time. *** NOTE: This story is not on hiatus! Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova is the fourth child of the Russian Tsar Nicholas. But at 16, she has few privileges past those of other girls her age. Her family is apathetic to her emotions, with the exception of her older sister Maria. Alexei, the crown prince, lives in constant fear of bleeding to death, as hemophilia takes the last male heir to the Romanov dynasty. Meanwhile, the Bolsheviks have been gaining power, and their secret soldiers are posted everywhere in Moscow. Too many young men are drafted into this secret army, offered only the alternative of death. Things reach a boiling point when the royal family is put under house arrest by the Bolshevik Cheka. Rumors are flying around the palace. There is talk of a "final blow", and Anastasia's whole world is about to be turned upside down.

On a cold February night in 1920, a young woman finds herself attempting suicide, due to the feeling that she does not belong in her family. Anna felt as though no one in her family understood her. She felt as though she was looked down upon for her frequent health issues and hospital visits. One moment she was stepping off of a bridge, only to be saved by an officer. The next moment, she found herself to be a patient at Dalldorf, a mental hospital. She did not remember a thing about her past. Slowly regaining it, she comes up with a master plan to swap fates with a person of higher standing. A person of royalty who was rumoured to have survived her family's execution in 1918.

Dancing bears, painted wings, things I almost remember and a song someone sings, once upon a December. It's 1906 in St.Petersburg, the world is alive and the Grand Duchess is only 5, a shared look between her grandmother, a knowing smile, a cry of longing and a music box, their little secret. She's leaving for Paris without Anastasia. It's 1917, Anastasia is 16, adored by everyone, the youngest of the Tsar's daughters and she is the picture of beauty. That is until the Bolsheviks attack the palace and the royals are taken to Ipatiev house in Yekaterinburg. They are never seen again. It's 1918, the Romanov family are woken during the night and told to dress, they are being moved to a safer location. They walk down to the cellar of the Ipatiev house, awaiting the arrival of their transport. It never came. They were executed right there in the cellar, no Romanov was left alive. It's 1927, and there's a rumour in St. Petersburg. Although the Tsar did not survive, one daughter may be still alive, the Princess Anastasia, but please do not repeat. This is the companion novel to the 2017 Broadway musical, giving insights to the story, and telling a much darker, historical twist to the enchanting tale. This may include references and implications to the 1997 original movie
