In 2025. a virtual reality massively multiplayer online role-playing game (VRMMORPG) called ROF (Realm Of Fela) is released. Both the game and the Nerve Gear were created by a South Korean gaming company Nexon. The Real of Fela is home to numerous guilds where wizards apply their magic for paid job requests. 300,000 players log into ROF's mainframe cyberspace for the first time, only to discover that they are unable to log out. The creator of the game says that there is only one way the players can be set free however, the message is hidden in the game. Those who suffer in-game deaths or forcibly remove the Nerve Gear out-of-game will suffer real-life deaths.
