I wish this story were different. I wish I could tell you that he survived the fall, that his head emerged from the dark water beneath him with a wide smile on his face and vitality in his eyes. I wish I could tell you that I took him into my arms and that we spent the rest of eternity together, but that isn't what happened. He hit the waves and didn't resurface, his body crushed by the impact and pierced on the ragged rocks below. Pink seafoam crashed against the cliffside, stained with his blood and the woeful realization of what could've been but never would be. My heart fell with him. © 2022 CASSIE GRIPP
