The Appalachian region, rich in both natural beauty and cultural heritage, serves as a tapestry woven from diverse threads of history, folklore, and tradition. The landscape itself shapes the stories told within its valleys and peaks. From the rolling hills to the dense forests, the geography has not only influenced settlement patterns but also the development of unique cultural practices. The isolation offered by the mountains allowed communities to flourish independently, preserving their distinct traditions, stories, and superstitions that have been passed down through generations.

Deep in the Appalachian mountains, there's a place locals refuse to talk about. Black Laurel Hollow. Hunters have vanished there. Search dogs have disappeared. And anyone who spends too long in the woods claims they hear something calling back from the trees. Randy Rourke runs a small podcast about unsolved mysteries and Appalachian folklore. When he discovers an old cassette tape labeled "Do Not Play - Hollow Recording," curiosity pulls him toward the very place the recording warns about. At first, the hollow only echoes his voice. Then it starts repeating his words. Then it starts saying things he never said. Some mysteries are meant to stay buried in the mountains... because once the woods learn your voice, they may never let it go. A short Appalachian horror story about isolation, echoes in the forest, and the things that listen in the dark.

A genderqueer hillbilly and a haunted woman must break a generational curse that has entwined their lives in the abandoned coal-stripped mountains of the Pennsylvania Wilds. *** Desperate to flee a dark past, Finley drives off a cliff and prays to the ancient hemlocks below to catch her fall. But in the abandoned hollows of the Pennsylvania Wilds, everything comes at a price. Tasked by an undead Not-Deer, Finley must find the three talismans that mark the mountain's boundaries in order to break a century old curse, one that has not only haunted the women in her family for generations, but has also bound the supernatural beings to the mountain, including the dead. Fortunately, the handsome genderqueer hillbilly up the road, River Hawthorne, is just as eager [maybe too eager] to break the curse. Together, they navigate the woods where hungry trees walk and other demonic haunts roam, growing closer every moment. But breaking the curse also comes at a price and Finley must decide what freedom is worth when her past comes crawling back through the woods to haunt her. HEARTWOOD blends gothic folk horror with cabincore sapphic romance. Rated Mature for violence, gore, sex, language Content Warnings: body horror, alcohol/drug use, transphobic attack, animal death/hunting, DV/abusive relationships, generational trauma, mentions of suicide & infant death Rankings: 1 in #appalachia 1 in #folkhorror 1 in #transmasc 5 in #gothicromance 8 in #sapphic

Simple-minded, God-fearing Jaroth is left with six children and a large settlement in 1920's rural Alabama after his wife dies. Inconsistencies in this short tale are intentional, as they are meant to reflect a speech pattern that, not unlike our own, tends to deviate from any form of structure, especially when certain words are prefaced or followed by other words that cause the speaker to alter sounds to be better understood. This is almost always done subconsciously. I hope that once you find the flow of the speech that you will fully enjoy the story, itself.

As an avid hiker and 4th-grade teacher, I decided to write a book about my section hikes of the Appalachian Trail (AT). Working at a year-round school, I get the benefit of longer breaks. I.E. 2-week spring break and 2-week fall break with 6 weeks for summer. Perfect for completing sections of the AT.
