Some years ago, astronaut Mark Watney of Ares 3 became stranded on the surface of Mars. His crewmates, determined not to let him die, resolved to turn their Hermes spacecraft around and come back for him. Before doing this, they needed to obtain more supplies in order to sustain themselves for the duration of the extended mission. The China National Space Administration agreed to sacrifice their Taiyang Shen probe and booster in order to send the astronauts the supplies they needed. In exchange, a Chinese astronaut would be given a seat on Ares 5, the last scheduled Ares mission to Mars. This is the story of that mission and the consequences of that collaboration undertaken to save Mark Watney's life.

Melina Gray is a chemist chosen for the Ares III mission. But when a storm comes, not all goes according to plan. Two are forced to fend for themselves on a planet where nothing grows.
