When Teia Cloto travels to Naples, Italy, hoping to steady a life already quietly unravelling, the last thing she needs is a blind date that turns into an easy, unexpected friendship. Alden instantly makes the city feel strangely familiar in ways Teia didn't know she needed. Drawn deeper into Naples' ancient past and her own unsettling sense of déjà vu, the line between coincidence and destiny begin to blur. Staying friends is simpler. But Teia must confront whether destiny is a story we inherit, or one we choose to rewrite, no matter the cost. Water and Sand is a contemporary love story that reimagines the myth of Theseus and Ariadne, where love is a labyrinth and friendship feels like the safest way out. #ONC2026 contest. Story is complete. Prompt 24: Staying as friends is meant to be safe, but that doesn't mean it's the path you're meant to take; Prompt 28: Self-love often starts small, like planting a seed. With time, patience, and a bit of light, it will grow; and Prompt 29: You meet many people in your life. Many will come and go, but some will leave footprints on your heart.

Teia Cloto arrives in Naples believing all she needs is a vacation. And to finish her master's thesis on an expedited schedule. What she doesn't need is for four matchmaking retirees to arrange a blind date before she has even unpacked. Instead, she meets Alden Colle. Worldly, charming, and mildly infuriating, Alden is a serious writer with a slight obsession with Greek mythology. One date turns into two, then three... They sail the Neapolitan coastline, wander ancient ruins, and fall into a connection Teia has no sensible way to explain. Around Alden, Naples feels oddly familiar. Hidden frescoes come alive. Mirrors show glimpses of another reality. And when he speaks of Theseus, Alden's sadness feels a little too personal. On their final night, Teia makes him a promise: *Naxos. Two years.* Five years later, Teia has a successful career, a dependable fiancé, and no intention of dwelling on Alden Colle again, especially when her ancient dating history suggests men like him rarely keep their promises. But when she returns to Italy, the past begins tugging at threads she thought she had severed, and Alden is waiting at the other end. Now Teia must decide whether to protect the sensible life she has built or risk everything for a love story Fate has been retelling for thousands of years. *** Water and Sand is a contemporary love story that reimagines the myth of Theseus and Ariadne, where love is a labyrinth and friendship feels like the safest way out. #Wattys2026

Rhadamanthe and Minos, the twin sons of the Minoan High Priestess, live where the sea is so blue it dwarfs the sky. This place is a paradise of small islands, where their people dance with the gods and adorn their palaces with flowers and colorful paintings. They live a peaceful life until their daily routine is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious individual: Polaris, from the North Sea. While everyone believes this man is lost in the Aegean Sea, far from his people, the golden-haired traveler threatens the balance of the region. His designs have driven him to gather an armada of sea peoples, as terrifying as a sea monster-a hydra-ready to devour all civilization like a ravenous beast. A determined people, resolved to follow him to the realm of the dead... Trigger Warnings: This story contains references to psychotropic plants used by oracles, alcohol consumption, and customs derived from Minoan spiritual practices, which differ from those of our time. Themes involving violence against women, as well as contexts of war and political maneuvering, are also present. The story includes an MM enemy-to-lovers romance with a slow burn (no dark romance). The themes of difficult and brutal motherhood are also present. You can send me a private note for more information on specific triggers.
