Rue Sycamore is an environmental science degree student in University of Wisconsin-Madison. For her, every number, letter, month, day, and name has their own color, and always has been the same colors since she could remember. One day during her biology class, the school's psychotherapist entered the classroom, asking them to take a test for the faculty's research. By the end of the test, Rue scored 0.53 for her grapheme color picker test, 0.39 for her month color picker test, and 0.49 for her weekday color picker test. The test indicated that anyone who scored lower than 1 had synesthesia, a neurological phenomenon where one sense can stimulate another sense. Later, she is put in a program with three other synesthetes. There is Colt, a badminton player who could taste words, Isabel, a ballet dancer who sees colors whenever she listens to music, and Horace, a math enthusiast who could see number lines in space. Together, Rue learns more about her gift that is mistakenly seen as a disorder.

Also how the appearance of Tanner, Jenny's childhood sweetheart triggers Dedric and his relationship with Jenny and his athlete career due to Dedric's mere jealousy. . . .
