It talks about post-traumatic stress disorder (or shell shock as it was rightfully called back then) and the horrors that the common-folk always suffer during any war. It has some horror and spiritual elements, but I leave it to the reader to decide whether or not the soldier's story is true or if he's a victim of his own insanity.
