It's 1991, and Aurelia Black begins her second year at Hogwarts certain that the danger she faced last year is over. She's wrong.
Invisible rifts have started to tear through the ancient wards of the castle - thin, jagged wounds in the very air that spill strange cold and drifting motes of light. Some vanish in seconds. Others linger like open doors to somewhere they shouldn't lead. The Black family locket at Aurelia's throat hums whenever one is near, the motes it carries swirling faster, as though urging her toward them.
As she searches for answers, Aurelia crosses paths with cunning older students, learns to read codes older than the castle itself, and realises someone may be using the rifts for their own dark purpose. Every step closer to the truth pulls her deeper into a race against time - before the largest tear of all opens, and something steps through that Hogwarts will never be able to send back.
