The Day Aunty's Recipe Almost Killed Us
Mama's jollof was famous in Madina. When she traveled, Aunty Grace volunteered to cook for the family of 6.
Morning came. The gas cylinder started hissing. Aunty Grace panicked. "Fire! Fire!" She grabbed water and rushed to pour it.
Kofi, her 12-year-old nephew, dropped his math book and shouted "No Aunty! Water on gas fire makes it worse!" He remembered from JHS Integrated Science: gas fire + water = explosion. He grabbed sand from the flower pot, covered the base of the flame. The hissing stopped.
Later, Aunty Grace was reading medicine labels for Grandpa. "Take 2 tablets, 3 times daily." Grandpa was weak. She wanted to "help him get better faster" by giving 4 tablets at once. Ama, Kofi's sister, stopped her. "Aunty, we learned dosage in school. More isn't better. It's poison." She checked the label, calculated the hours, set an alarm on the phone she learned to use in ICT class.
At night, NEPA took light. The house was dark. Kofi calculated their budget from what he learned in math: "Ama, if we use the big bulb for 6 hours, the prepaid will finish before month end. Let's use the small LED and study by it. 10 cedis will last us 2 weeks." Ama used English class to write a polite note to the landlord about the faulty wiring causing the hissing gas.
When Mama returned, dinner was late but everyone was safe, healthy, and the lights were still on.
Aunty Grace sat down and said, "I thought school was just for certificates. Today, school saved our lives, our money, and Grandpa."
