Rowan escapes an RDA facility after being pushed too far during a field test. He's not fully in control-his conditioning is triggered, and he turns on handlers before fleeing into the ocean. He's injured in the escape: gunfire, burns, and exhaustion. He doesn't choose the reef-he crashes into it, barely alive. He's found by Lo'ak, who recognizes something familiar in him-an outsider, like himself. Instead of calling warriors immediately, Lo'ak tries to help, bringing in Tsireya, who insists Rowan isn't just a threat.
