Riddle Evergreen is born during World War I and loses her mother when she is only six years old after their hospital is attacked. She becomes an orphan and eventually travels to Canada, where she lives in an orphanage in Nova Scotia. There, she learns to read and write and develops a love for books and stories. At thirteen, Riddle is adopted by Samuel and Miriam Johnson and starts a new life in Avonlea. She becomes close friends with Lily Barton and gets to know Ethan Caldwell. Ethan initially teases her, but they slowly become friends. Riddle also struggles with Veronica, Clara, and Jenna, who bully her because of her past. Riddle shows great courage when a fire breaks out at the Thompson family farm. She risks her own life to rescue a young girl named Hannah from the burning house. Afterward, the people of Avonlea see Riddle as a hero, although she does not feel comfortable with the attention. Later, Riddle writes and performs a poem about her past, war, loss, hope, and healing at the Avonlea Fall Festival. Her poem deeply touches the people in the town. As Riddle grows older, she slowly learns to deal with her painful past while building a new life surrounded by family and friends. She discovers that she wants to become a writer and hopes to use her stories to inspire others.
