I was a young girl living in District 13. I lived as all others did, trying to live in any way I could. Then, in the blink of an eye, my entire district became ruins. The people in the Capitol thought we were killed. But they were wrong. I ran away. I lived in the woods for awhile. Until I was found. A Capitol hovercraft came and lifted me off my feet. Then, and only then, did I know that I had lost the small sliver of freedom that I had.

Kathryn is an Avox. She had another name once, but it has faded away over the years. She's been an Avox for as long as she can remember. Her parents committed a crime against the Capitol, but they died before they could be punished properly. So the Capitol took it out on Kathryn. When Kathryn is set as the servant to Lyle Coates, one of the tributes for the 112th Hunger Games, she falls in love with him. However, she knows that Avoxes are never allowed to talk to the tributes, so she keeps her attraction inside. She can't even talk to him. And why would one of the tributes even pay attention to an Avox like her?
