Clare grew up hearing stories about the supernatural, but that is all they really were to her - stories. It isn't until she and her best friend leave the sheltered town of Sanctuary that they learn there is more truth to the stories than they thought. Clare becomes a target when word of her heritage gets out, with both friend and foe trying to determine just how her unique background can help them win the war she wants nothing to do with.
Excerpt:
For a moment, I could not breathe. I could not think about anything but him. He was literally breath taking. He took a step toward me and suddenly I realized I was sitting there, mouth wide open, staring at him!
Turning away, I could feel the heat rising. I was mortified. He probably thought I was a complete loser for staring at him, WITH MY MOUTH HANGING OPEN!
Instead of crawling under the table and hoping he just walked right past, I tried to shake off my embarrassment and glanced back at my book, trying and totally failing at pretending to read.
"Hey." His voice sent small shivers up my back and I struggled to control my expression as I looked up at him.
I could feel the heat rising again.
"Hey." I managed back, my voice much quieter and shier than normal.
What was wrong with me? How was I suddenly reduced to mono-syllable responses? Be confident. Smile. For goodness sake, breathe!
"Can I sit here?"
