Charlotte Miller grows up spoiled and accustomed to a luxurious life. In 1917, as World War I intensifies, her sweetheart, John Smith, is drafted into the military. Before leaving, he proposes, and Charlotte happily accepts. During the war, they stay connected through letters, but the correspondence gradually stops, leading Charlotte to believe John has died.
