Rachel Gardner is thought of as a strange and odd girl, her only friend is Eddie, a boy who's family manages graveyards. When her teacher announces an assignment to research on criminals Rachel chooses Isaac Foster as her subject.

I find myself remembering us in the oddest of places at the most inappropriate of times. Random memories or thoughts can pop into my head with almost any trigger, the scent of your cologne on someone else, a jacket you wore once, a guns n' roses shirt, anything. I often hope for a split second that you'll come back with the flood of memories. But the real thoughts of us, the good, the bad, the beginning, the end, and all the bullshit in between, come from the dark corners. I've been catching myself wandering around the dark corners quite often lately.

Jeremy Frise did have a friend when he was 6, but thanks to his messed up nature he ended up leading the boy into the woods to play hide-n-seek, and there was a catch: the other boy would spend the rest of his short life wandering around the dark forest. Yes, well, that was Jeremy for you. People at the time didn't know his hobby was homicide, but they all knew something was off with little Jeremy. They really had no idea.
