Era is bought by an English gentleman to amuse his invalid son. She makes immediate friends with young Nicholas, but is more intimidated by the sudden appearance of his wild older brother, Xavier. He has gone to the far East and has scars and a roughened nature, which scares her gentle shyness. Xavier never knew such a soft young woman, who seems to cure Nicholas's pains, and tames his own impulsive spirit. It is a surprise to young Eya when the gentleman's son spends so much time in her company. She thinks that he loves his brother, whom she is often with as his constant friend and care-giver, and that is why he stays around. There is nothing she finds interesting in this young man of darker manners. But when Nicholas falls on one of their outings and becomes ill beyond hope, she must turn to the strength and stability of this young man to guide her and give her courage. Xavier proves to have a compassionate heart, and is willing to hold her up when she feels like she's about to fall from the weight of her worries. He has more kindness and gentleness towards her because he knows a world that is so hard and cruel and appreciates her sweetness. As happy as Eya is at their English estate, she is suddenly given her freedom when Nicholas gets well. Without knowing why Xavier granted her her freedom, she rides to France to find her brother, who is now married to the daughter of his master. But it takes only a short time to realize that she is still a slave. A slave to that beautiful English estate in the countryside, and the man that will day be lord of it...
