When a diesel engine is in a cold start condition, the lower temperatures reduce the volatility of the diesel fuel, making it harder to ignite. In this situation, the glow plug, when energized, heats up rapidly, reaching temperatures of around 900°C at its tip. This increase in temperature raises the combustion chamber's temperature, making it easier for the diesel fuel to ignite and helping the engine to start smoothly.
