I couldn't bear to see him like that. He was my best friend, the one who had always been my shoulder to cry on. Something in me-reckless or selfless, I still can't tell-knew I had to save him, to save the whole situation. So I stood up, walked to the altar, and said I would marry him. What the hell was I thinking? Marry my best friend? We didn't even love each other like that. But I couldn't watch him humiliated. He gave me a look-half shock, half what-are-you-doing?-then took my hand. His grip was warm but trembling, as if holding on to the last shred of dignity he had left. The murmurs in the crowd grew louder, a mix of disbelief and judgment, but neither of us looked away. In that moment, it didn't matter that we weren't in love. All that mattered was that he wouldn't face humiliation alone. When the officiant asked if he accepted, he hesitated for a fraction of a second-just enough to make me wonder if I'd made a mistake-before he said, "I do. Demi Reece."
