We were kids when the world still felt infinite before the sickness settled in my lungs before he learned how to look away. Before I stopped expecting him to stay. He was my beginning. my next-door everything. Until middle school swallowed him whole and spit out someone colder. Someone popular. Someone who stopped saying my name like it meant something. Now, years later, I still wonder what might've happened if things had been different. If he'd looked back. If I asked him to. But life isn't a series of second chances. It's breath by breath, moment by moment and not everyone gets to finish the story they started. I just hope, when I'm gone, he remembers me the way I remember him-completely, endlessly like I never had a choice.
