Hey there! I've been reading about greek mythology for a while now and this short story is based on the folklore of Medusa the Gorgon. What really inspired me to write this story is the Medusa Statue Holding Perseus' Severed Head by Luciano Garbati. According to Greek mythology, Medusa was a mortal priestess at the temple of Athena. Where she was dishonored by sea God Poseidon and Athena in her rage cursed her for breaking her vow of celibacy and She grew hideous snakes on her head and a gaze that could turn men into stone. Interestingly women today views this story of Medusa completely differently than the classic myth, which is probably how men saw the story. A lot of us view this story as Athena protecting Medusa by giving her the power to make any man who looked at her completely harmless. In fact, Medusas head was used as a symbol to mark women's shelters in Ancient Greece (atleast that's what they say on the internet) I'm not sure it it's legit but this is one of my favorite little tidbits.
