In this world huge radiation tanks had burst causing all of the humans to flee to somewhere beyond it. Only Emilia Staark remains. She was there when the radiation tanks burst and somehow survived it. Now she's just trying to figure out why while she battles becoming a monster once again. Next there is Rhylo. Rhylo is a Xion, a hybrid organism that is full of radiation and is able to survive in this horrible world. He doesn't know why but his thoughts are plagued by one word, Emilia. Now he's out to find her. Finally there's Josh Garrison. He had been sent to the radioactive Earth to see if it was a livable environment. However if it wasn't he was supposed to report back and then they'd find a way to purify the radioaction. However he really has no way to get back with his only means of transportation wrecked. When Josh is about to die he's saved by Rhylo and brought along to help him find Emilia. Emilia battles her own past and tries to piece together bits of her life that are missing and her faithful 'Knight in shining armor' Wheetziebat is at her side. They all meet and are now trying to find the answers to everyone's problems.

The Fortress of Meropide is the place that houses the exiled criminals of Fontaine. Although it's essentially a prison, life there is not so bad that some people even decide to stay even after their sentence time is over. But not for everyone - some people suffer without the knowledge of the duke.
