People go crazy just to have the bragging rights of being related to royalty, but is it all it's cranked up to be, or is it merely all a joke; a story meant to provide its readers with tear-jerking laughter? What's done in the dark often comes to light, so let the illumination process commence, via the eldest of the Chatwins. At Brakebills University, magic is very, very real. Only the most gifted magicians in the world are granted acceptance. Having spent an entire semester trying to stop and destroy The Beast - a mysterious, evil force - Quentin Coldwater discovers that it isn't his first run-in with it. Thanks to a powerful time spell, Quentin has had 40 chances to defeat the beast. In this story Quentin, Penny and Alice are desperate to rescue their classmates who have been kidnapped by the Beast. Quentin uses an ancient spell to use the emotions from his friends and the power of Jane Chatwin's heart to battle the beast. Quentin spent an entire semester trying to destroy The Beast - a malevolent being who wants him dead. Now, he believes he has discovered the key to what may prove to be The Beast's demise, he simply needs to retrieve it from the Plover Estate. There is a terrible evil known as the beast that threatens magic in the universe. It is up to a group of students at Brakebills University to destroy this monster. Quentin Coldwater and his friends have trained for this encounter with the beast forty times, and never prevails. They are given the chance of a do over with a magical pocket watch owned by Jane Chatwin. Each time Jane resets time she changes something that could possibly help these students defeat this threat. You will learn of the first battle with the beast. You will see how Jane Chatwin discovers how Quentin is destined to kill the beast. You will be left wondering what she needs to change in order to have triumph, and reclaim Fillory.

Quentin Coldwater, Julia Wicker, Josh Hoberman, and Kady Orloff-Diaz face off against the Beast in a somewhat different guise. Josh takes the lead this time with a plan that will cut Quentin down to size. This is my entry in Syfy's #BattleTheBeast contest. Quentin Coldwater has faced The Beast forty times, and he's lost every time. His friends die, he dies. Jane Chatwin was able to use a magic pocketwatch to rewind time all those other times, but this time Jane Chatwin is dead and there are no more mulligans for Quentin and his friends.
