Evarínya and Eragon are twins and have lived with Garrow for as long as they can remember. One day when they are hunting in the Spine, a flash of bright light comes and two mysterious stones appear. They return home with the stones and for a while all is normal. The traders come and one of them, Merlock reveals that the 'stones' may not be what they seem. Before long the stones hatch into dragons, a bluey-purple for Eragon and a multicoloured for Evarínya. Together the twins, their dragons and the mysterious storyteller track the Ra'zac, discovering many things about the world around them.

After Eragon defeats Galabotix, he makes a home for himself in east Alagaësia. When he completes all the tasks he needs to do, he decides to go see Arya. She suggests visiting the evil king's lair, now reduced to rubble. They searche the castle for anything useful, and Eragon finds what he was not expecting. This is a prequel and re-write of the series inheritance, In the first book we learn that Brom- a storyteller was in fact a dragon rider. However there is not much chance to reveal his past or his secret love with Eragon's mother before he dies.
