In this story, Brooklyn is 16 and dealing with the stress and expectations she has from being her father's daughter. In this book, Brooklyn discovers her passions. Being Chance Perez's daughter isn't easy, especially with having no privacy in life. She grew up in the spotlight but that doesn't make it any easier. Chance is in a band so he didn't get to see his daughter much. While Brooklyn was growing up, he had such a good relationship with her. But as she got older, they just started drifting. Chance felt that he was losing his connection with his daughter. Brooklyn got used to Chance not being there. She had to deal with things on her own. I'm not saying Chance didn't try to strengthen his relationship with his daughter, because he did. Brooklyn just didn't feel like trying. She felt if she got closer to him, eventually they would drift apart again. So she distanced herself from him and kept secrets. Chance doesn't know much about his daughter, even though he got full custody of her when she was 5. He just wasn't around much so she had to learn to function on her own. They were close until she was around the age of 12. Since then, they haven't been very close.
