"I used to think love was something soft-something you're supposed to be good at. Something clean.
Something people with normal fathers and normal lives get to have without breaking anything first."
He let out a short, humorless laugh, glancing at the chains on his wrist like they meant nothing and everything at once.
"But I don't know normal. I only know what stays when everything else leaves."
His eyes lifted to her, quieter now-less chaos, more truth.
"So for me... love isn't gentle. It doesn't ask permission. It doesn't behave."
A pause.
"It's the one thing I don't run from. The one thing I come back to even when I know I shouldn't."
His voice dropped, almost like a confession he hated admitting.
"If I love you... it means I'll ruin myself trying not to lose you."
