'Boyhood, Brotherhood, and the Buddha' Before I knew what Buddhism was, a TV show tried to teach me. Before I knew what safety was, a man showed me. A painted broomstick. A stone egg. A boy watching Monkey Magic in a house that didn't feel safe. Forty years between what you are shown and what you finally understand. This is about Monkey Magic. It's about brotherhood. And the long way home.

I participated in a 7-day retreat at the headquarters of Fo Guang Shan in Taiwan, one of the largest Buddhist organizations globally. This retreat is not exclusive to Buddhists; in fact, some of my friends who attended are Catholic or Protestant. With the right perspective and an open heart, Buddhism becomes a philosophy where its teachings can bring about positive changes in our lives. The experiences I gained from the retreat held a deeper meaning than I had anticipated. I'm not particularly religious, nor am I the most knowledgeable person about the Dharma. Nevertheless, I wish to share my experiences and reflections on personal growth during the retreat, as they deeply touched my heart and transformed my life. I hope that you, too, can discover profound lessons in my story.

Once upon a time, there was a person. Like him were many, and many were the ones in charge of spreading peace over their land - all of them strong, wise and brave. But their leader didn't look for the strong ones, didn't called the wise, nor stopped to think on the brave ones. He, the one known as The Pilgrim, chose The Golden Cicada for the job. His was the task now, the one that brought him into the city of heroes, the place where the strong, the wise and the brave abound, and where a very special person is waiting to be found.

Buddhists characterize the agitated, restless quality of our negative thoughts as the Monkey Mind. Like a troupe of monkeys swinging through the forest, our minds rarely pause to savor the peace of the present moment. Instead, they move wildly from branch to branch, chattering and screeching about what we have or haven’t accomplished, how we fear we’ve failed or will fail. Our negative thoughts keep us in a locked in a constant state of worry while we fritter away the moments of our lives in a turbulent back and forth journey between what was and what might be.
