First name, Yasu, Surname, Hamasaki, was raised as a boy by her mother who never wanted a girl. Her female features weren't one of those that made her known by first glance as a girl, so she was basically a boy. Growing up, Yasu didn't have many friends and usually would be thrown outback with nothing but an old deflated volleyball. Volleyball was the only thing that brought her join through her school years, up until her mother moved suddenly and she was forced to go to Karsuno High for her first year in high school. Even with her principal believing she was a boy which ended her with a boys uniform, it's normal for her to be asked to join the boys volleyball team.
