Constantinople has fallen, just as her sister city in the west did almost a millennium before. It was thought that Constantine XI had died with no heir during the final assault of the 'Queen of Cities' with no heir to speak of. This is not true, just a month before the arrival of the Sultan's army, he had a son, when he heard of Mehmet's march, he sent him away with his most trusted friend. Octavius, as he had been named, had been taken to be raised near Athens, he was taught the old ways, given access to records of the conquests of Alexander, Julius, Trajan and all others that could be gathered from the imperial library before their departure. Since he had no official surname, though by tradition he would have his father's name, he was granted that which his namesake before him had taken, Caesar.

A ten minute short story, based on the legend of the general Belisarius being blinded by his Emperor, Justinian. It is almost certainly a legend, and not fact, but it makes for an interesting story.

As his formidable heir, Prince Hektorios, continues to build on this legacy, the fate of the empire begins to tremble beneath a web of ambition and betrayal. Lazaros Makedon, the last descendant of the once-great House Makedon, clings to his dream of restoring his family's honor, navigating a treacherous political landscape that has long forgotten his ancestors. Simultaneously, the ambitious Prince Leon, the second son of Emperor Megistos, seeks to undermine his brother's claim to the throne, driven by jealousy and a thirst for power. As tensions rise, Doux Polykarpos, an influential noble with designs on the imperial crown, conspires to dethrone Megistos and ignite a civil war that could shatter the empire. With loyalties tested and dark secrets unraveling, the line between friend and foe blurs. In "Shadows of the Throne," alliances will be forged and broken, and the struggle for supremacy will unfold against a backdrop of historical grandeur and impending chaos, as the fate of Byzantium hangs in the balance. Will Lazaros reclaim his family's legacy, or will the machinations of the powerful seal the once-proud House Makedon's fate forever?

In early 13th century, Latin invaders came on their flying galleys and conquered the defenceless Byzantine Empire. Forty years later, a fragile peace between the victorious nobles is maintained by way of anemo regattas, races of flying boats, with the winner granted any wish that is in the Emperor's power to deliver. Ikaria is not a Latin - she's a half-Greek daughter of a brilliant anemo engineer, and a genius of the science herself; her dream is to one day win the great regatta of Egriponte, the most prestigious of all competitions - but the commoners have just been banned from taking part in the races. To realise her dream, she must ally with a nobleman - a mysterious Greek turncoat, Mikhael.
