finn's car slowed, then stopped in front of her. the engine idled. the door opened.
he stepped out.
empty-handed.
just him, hoodie pulled over his head, eyes soft when they found her.
oh.
that was it then.
her chest sank so fast it almost hurt. she nodded once, like she'd expected this, like she was fine. "it's okay," she said before he could speak. "i knew it was a long shot."
finn smiled-but not the apologetic kind. the kind that looked almost... excited.
"come here," he said gently.
before she could ask why, he walked past her and popped the trunk open.
it lifted slowly, revealing bags. a duffel. a backpack. folded clothes. a small cooler. even a blanket shoved in sideways like it barely fit.
sian stared.
"...finn?"
he leaned against the open trunk, eyes never leaving her. "i didn't bring much," he said. "figured we can buy the rest."
her breath hitched. "you-"
"i'm thinking of a house by the beach," he continued, like he hadn't just turned her world upside down. "surrounded by trees. quiet. somewhere nobody cares who we are."
her vision blurred.
he tilted his head, smile softening. "is four hours away far enough?"
she laughed, the sound breaking halfway into something that felt dangerously close to crying. she shook her head. "you're insane."
"for you?" he said. "yeah. probably."
she stepped closer without realizing it. "you're really doing this."
finn nodded. "i said i'd take care of you."
he reached out, brushing his thumb against her cheek, grounding her. "you don't have to decide anything right now. if we drive for ten minutes and you want to turn back, we will."
