Coralie was practically born and raised at Calliope Carnival. A talented performer, she can walk the tightrope, perform daring acrobatics, and stand perfectly still while knives are hurled inches from her body. But lately, strange things have been happening. Freak accidents plague carnival-goers and staff alike, and if they continue, the gates may be forced to close for good. Whispers spread among the staff that the same curse that struck eighteen years ago has returned. Coralie, however, begins investigating the accidents, convinced that someone is deliberately sabotaging the place. Then, one night, she finally catches someone in the act-a man dressed entirely in black, his face concealed behind a mask. Before disappearing into the darkness, he winks at her and says something so ridiculous it makes her blood boil: "Careful, darling. Keep chasing me like this and I'll start thinking you like me."
