Cascadia: America Fractured is a work of fiction.
The idea for this book came about in early 2015 when the Populist candidate Donald J Trump wasn't going away, and a country already divided became angry. Instead of venting that anger at politicians, it was instead aimed directly at our neighbors and family members.
Little did I know how far this would go.
In my first draft, written in late summer of 2016 had a Democrat winning the election, and by 2017 a movement for Texas Secession, coming to a head in the 2018 midterm, but the separation was non violent, and California electing to break away in 2020, leading to the over 35% of the US GNP going away in a matter of two years, leading to the complete fracture of the Nation.
When Trump won in November of 2016, the story flipped and it was California, and the Western edge of the Pacific Northwest following California out of the Republic.
Much of the historical aspect of the story prior to 2015 is based in fact, with some things changed to better fit the story line. Where the story strays from the reality we are living in is the 2015 Presidential race and subsequent election of Donald J Trump. Who for obvious reasons is not mentioned in the book, but instead Vance Deel is the President when the story opens, and while he has similar characteristics, he is not DJT.
While the story has aspects of dystopian fiction, it is the background in the greater personal arc of a dozen characters who's lives are completely disrupted and in many cases altered irreversibly by the coming apart of the nation they knew, and the sometimes violent rebirth of what was for 245 years America.
