The sun was merciless that afternoon, pouring down on the rows of restless graduates lined up in their navy-blue gowns. The air smelled faintly of paper programs, freshly cut grass, and the bittersweet edge of goodbyes. Amber adjusted the tassel of her cap for the fifth time. She hated how it kept slipping into her eyes, but she hated asking anyone for help even more.
Jack slid into line beside her, his grin annoyingly bright even under the summer heat. His presence carried the effortless ease of someone who belonged everywhere-on the basketball court, in the cafeteria, even here, at the edge of goodbye.
"You'll miss me, you know," he teased, nudging her shoulder.
Amber shot him a look sharp enough to cut paper. "Like I'd miss a headache."
He chuckled, undeterred, and for a moment his eyes softened-warm, like the side of him no one else saw. But just as quickly, the teasing mask returned. Their names were called in sequence, almost back-to-back. Jack strode across the stage like it was his second home. Applause followed him, as natural as breathing. Amber walked after him, quiet but steady, her honesty and wit hidden under the surface, like ink waiting for paper. When the ceremony ended, chaos erupted-caps flying, families cheering, hugs all around. Amber spotted her parents in the crowd, their faces proud but expectant, the weight of their pressure already creeping back into her chest.
And then Jack was there again, standing too close, holding his diploma like a trophy.
"So," he said, cocking his head, "this is it. No more cat and dog fights in the hallway."
"Good," Amber replied, forcing a smirk. "I was starting to run out of insults."
After all, this was just Jack. Only much later would she admit that walking away that day felt a little like leaving a chapter unfinished.
