"You're shaking," he whispered. I looked down at my hands to realize it was true. I pressed them together in a feeble attempt to stifle any show of weakness. "Are you scared of me?" he asked, his voice soft with an undertone of steel. I found that I couldn't answer. Not because the vines were covering my mouth, but because either response had emotional baggage that I wasn't ready to deal with.
