In a quiet village at the turn of the century, lives are shaped by silence, faith, and restraint. Father Markus Engel keeps his life ordered by duty and devotion. When he encounters Philomena Rettig, a young woman shaped by thoughtfulness, independence, and an ease with mystery, something long contained begins to stir in them both. For Philomena, the attraction is neither accidental nor feared. For Markus, it is an awakening he does not know how to survive. As belief and longing draw closer together, he is forced to confront what he has given his life to and what loving her would cost.

Denis Dean is the entertainment writer/editor at "Something Else," a glossy, New York-based consumer magazine. He overflows with talent and ambition, but his lack of confidence hinders his dream of becoming a major player in the ultra-competitive world of magazine publishing. All that changes when, after getting walloped by a bolt of lightning on a suburban golf course, Denis discovers he can read people's minds. Though this phenomenal endowment freaks him out at first, he's soon ecstatic to discover that it's an amazing benefit to his career. Denis' mind-reading ability also comes in handy in his personal life, when he gets the goods on his cheating girlfriend, helps a woman whose family erroneously believes is in an irreversible coma, exposes a deceitful coworker and helps his father out of a severe financial jam. Throughout it all, though, the gift's rewards come with a price: Denis' guilty conscience torments him, he longs to unburden himself to someone but fears the consequences, he suffers backlash from jealous coworkers, he alienates his only sibling and his newly gained confidence is challenged when his ability is suspended. "Riding the Crest" is fun, lively and moves along at an entertaining pace.

I wanted to find out what happens when a demon afflicts a Post-Human consciousness, that is, a being afflicts a human who has uploaded their minds into an immortal body-less form. How would an ancient institution grapple with that? A Cyberpunk Exorcism. Fr. Ben Xavier's life as a priest is a quiet one. Few of his parishioners know that he is the diocese's appointed exorcist and those cases are rare enough not to disturb the day to day hum of parish life. Fr. Xavier thinks that he has seen enough of humanity to never be surprised-- until an Incarnate-- a human whose consciousness has been uploaded into immortality online-- appears at his door manifesting some truly confusing signs. Even if he got permission from the Bishop how can he preform the ancient rite on a being that doesn't have a body-- on something that he isn't fully convinced is even a human soul?
