This story is about a young Centurion, Lucius Varus. Lucius started off as a Roman Legionnaire, just as any great general of Rome does. In time, his name would be remembered through the ages, until the very end of time. Lucius had been stationed with Legio II Augusta, The Second Legion of Augustus Caesar. The Legion was deployed in Africa, to put an end to the Carthaginian threat once and for all. Scipio the Elder had led the assault after fifteen years of harassment by Hannibal the Great. They sailed for Carthage. Would the Second be able to destroy Carthage? Or would Hannibal return, and wipe them out, forcing a retreat and saving Carthage from the might of Rome? Cover photo by is of the actual banner carried by the Legio II Augustus.

Can a Believer survive the persecutions of Rome? Centurion Quintus Maximus Varo, a soldier in the army of Rome, fights to understand how his new-found faith can mesh with the heathenistic and demanding environment of life in the Imperial Army. Meanwhile, Simon Peter, an orphan taken in by his Uncle, attempts to decide of revenge is ever a motive to pursue a questionable and dangerous quest. Set between 33 and 94AD, To Take on Rome follows the lives and adventures of these two men, polar opposites, from the destruction of Jerusalem by the armies of Titus, to John's exile on the island of Patmos, as they meet and interact with Jesus' disciples and followers in locations throughout the known world. Wrestling with questions of family, faith, morality and forgiveness, these characters attempt to reconcile the same internal and external struggles subjugating our flesh to the guidance of the Spirit, that we even today as Believers must ponder, face and conquer.

This is mainly a five part idiosyncratic reflection on the life of Jesus of Nazareth; someone whom many people with little time for religion still find attractive. It is mostly from a talk I gave in 1988 while visiting a church in Pennsylvania. Please make allowance for this context in what I have written. I am not trying to proselytise. I believe that, whatever path we follow, the important thing is to come to a point where we live, not to gain God's approval, but to respond to his** love. For me, that love is embodied in Jesus. * Ecce Homo (John 19:5) - the Latin words with which Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor, presented the scourged Jesus to his accusers before sending him to be crucified. ** When I speak of God as 'he' I am not assigning a gender; but I am not willing to tie language up in knots in order to be politically correct. Feminists beware! (but really I approve of what you stand for.)
