This story came from a germ that turned into a virus that had to be written out of my system, so like most stories really. After seeing Alberto Giacometti's sculpture: "The Palace at 4 a.m." from 1932 (MoMA) I became enchanted by the idea of wondering alone around a palace at 4 a.m. while show fell on the silent fountains outside.

This was also writen for Grazia magazine first chapter competition. Writers were given a stilted paragraph about a woman on a train. Inorder to win the writer must deliver something fitting the Grazia readership/style...though once a writer starts a story, it doesn't always go where you would like, but somewhere else entirely. However, as Stephen King advises don't contrive, excavate your story...

a young woman cons her way into the decaying house of a rich and decadent family... This was writen for Grazia magazine first chapter competition where writers are given the first paragraph; in this case: a woman standing outside a grand shuttered house. It is a useful writing exercise as one idea leads to another...the question is whether to then this chapter into a novel.

This is a Southern Gothic tale about Waker's journey to herself. However, the author plans a rewrite to smooth out the edges for a novella or screen play. The controversial content may preclude a movie but it could make a nice radio play for a rainy afternoon...enjoy.

Lines has now evolved into a radio play, the next phase of the of the writing process will be to apply what the author has learned from John Truby's excellent book: The Anatomy of Story. (Faber and Faber 2008) for the novella. Watch this space...
