However, things take an unexpected turn when the four cherubs accidentally kill Lyle instead. As a result of their actions, Theodore, Cletus, Collin, and Keenie are banished from Heaven and sent to the eternal pit of Hell. Upon arrival in Hell, the four cherubs split up, leaving Theodore to fend for himself. But fate has other plans for him. He encounters the princess of Hell, Charlie Morningstar, who runs a rehabilitation hotel that offers a chance at redemption to misfit demons.
