The First World War took Audette's husband in the fateful year of 1918. With no prospects of her own, she's managed to keep to her modest self by surviving on the land instead of even humoring the thought of returning to her family. A routine hunting excursion to replenish her nearly exhausted food supply proves to be more eventful than she thought when she makes an unexpected friend.

1942-when power wasn't voted in, it was taken. Chicago belongs to the Mafia. Politicians are bought, cities are controlled, and a young capo rules his territory with old-world loyalty and a short fuse. When rival mobs cross into his city, a single encounter sets off a chain reaction no one can stop. Families fracture. Nations spiral. War moves closer with every deal made in smoke-filled rooms. And when the bombs finally fall, the world that rose from the ashes was never the same-twisted into something far from human.
