1860, India Gauri was expected to be quiet, obedient, and invisible. But beneath her composed exterior burned a fire that no tradition could contain. Married into an orthodox household, she learns to hide every thought behind a lowered gaze-until Ashutosh, the man shaped by the same customs, begins to notice the silence in her eyes. When their hands brush across a lamp's glow, something unspoken passes between them-too brief to name, too dangerous to repeat. Yet in that single heartbeat, the walls of the house seem to breathe. As shadows of duty tighten, and every glance carries the weight of consequence, Gauri's courage begins to awaken the man who once believed obedience was virtue. What begins as a flicker of understanding becomes a quiet storm neither can contain. Step into 1860, where honour and desire walk the same narrow path, and where one woman dares to let the light beneath her veil burn bright enough to be seen. ...... "Kya kaha tumne?" ("What did you just say?") His tone carried anger - but his eyes searched hers for something more. Gauri didn't flinch. There was something in her gaze tonight... courage, perhaps, or a trace of mischief that refused to bow. She drew a slow breath, the corner of her lips trembling. "Maine kaha, Ashut-" The name broke midway, swallowed by the silence between them. ---

There was confusion in the eyes of the seven year old Surangi as they dipped mango leaves into the sandal-turmeric paste to anoint her. She did not know what marriage meant, she was just told that she would move into a new home in a village far away and Yashoda mami would be her mother-in-law. Fighting back tears she clutched her carved sandalwood doll, trying not to miss her mother Kaveri whose recent demise had prompted her father to agree to the alliance between Surangi and Madhav, the eleven year old son of Raghav, Kaveri's distant cousin. Shridhar knew he could not bring up his daughter alone. He was constantly under pressure to take a new bride to bear him the much desired son as his late wife had only left behind a daughter. He chose to marry little Surangi off in accordance with the custom of the day rather than leave her at the mercy of a step-mother.

she was a scattered palette filled with every colour and he was the calm painter who envisioned the whole world through her on his canvas. A tale set in the late 1800s, India when feminism was a taboo while patriarchy and misogyny was a norm. Labanya, an eight year old girl who was a little too curious for her age and gender was tied to Rudrajit, an eleven year old boy who was a bit too composed and soft for his age and gender by the sacred bond of marriage. What would this marriage bring about in the lives of these young souls who were yet to discover their own selves? N.B - This story revolves not only around the romance between the two main character but also focuses on the important aspects and lessons that one could learn from this story by living through the characters and their mindsets while also getting to know about the very different environment of those time. I do not intend to impersonate or resemble any real personalities through my story as it's purely my imagination. Mention of real places and a few historic personalities are there just to add depth to the story and make it realistic.

Calcutta 1969, a period of revolution and poetry. Charulata Dutta dreams to be a scholar, even if it implies going against her conservative family. Despite being the first graduate in the history of Dutta women, she soon finds herself trapped in a web of loneliness and desolation. In her perfect world of Victorian literature and Elizabethan plays, her less than perfect family poses a constant threat to her freedom. Until she receives an envelope full of jasmine flowers. As time flies, she bares her emotions completely to her anonymous friend, whom she writes anonymous letters. While her family prepares for her marriage, she finds herself deep in love with this anonymous correspondent. Nilotpol Shome has a myriad variety of mismatched degrees and interests. Despite being a soon to graduate medical student, his quill never hesitates to voice his radical ideas. When an unexpected turn of events coerces him to seek help from a loner english major, he could never speculate that she would be the woman who could tame his wild heart. However, she is in love with another, presumably her fiancé. In the congested Calcutta streets, they both strive to prevent their heart from shattering into splinters. As Calcutta journeys through post-independence struggle and budding Communism, the City of Joy stands witness to a tale of unexpected friendships, love and loss that blooms in it's streets. After all, youth turns everyone into a rebel and a poet.
